Attacks and Defenses in Crowdsourced Mapping Services

چکیده
Real-time crowdsourced maps such as Waze provide timely updates on traffic, congestion, accidents and points of interest. In this paper, we demonstrate how lack of strong location authentication allows creation of software-based Sybil devices that expose crowdsourced map systems to a variety of security and privacy attacks. Our experiments show that a single Sybil device with limited resources can cause havoc on Waze, reporting false congestion and accidents and automatically rerouting user traffic. More importantly, we describe techniques to generate Sybil devices at scale, creating armies of virtual vehicles capable of remotely tracking precise movements for large user populations while avoiding detection. We propose a new approach to defend against Sybil devices based on co-location edges, authenticated records that attest to the one-time physical co-location of a pair of devices. Over time, colocation edges combine to form large proximity graphs that attest to physical interactions between devices, allowing scalable detection of virtual vehicles. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach using large-scale simulations, and discuss how they can be used to dramatically reduce the impact of attacks against crowdsourced mapping services.

متن کاملThe Economic Incentives Of Providing Network Security Services On The Internet Infrastructure
Distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks have emerged as a prevalent way to compromise the availability of networks/servers, which imposed financial losses for e-commerce businesses. Many defenses that mitigate the effect of ongoing DDOS attacks have been proposed. However, none of the defenses have been widely deployed on the Internet infrastructure at this point because of a lack of under...
متن کاملDwarf Frankenstein is still in your memory: tiny code reuse attacks
Code reuse attacks such as return oriented programming and jump oriented programming are the most popular exploitation methods among attackers. A large number of practical and non-practical defenses are proposed that differ in their overhead, the source code requirement, detection rate and implementation dependencies. However, a usual aspect among these methods is consideration of the common be...

Adhoc and sensor wireless networks are challenging and promising field for researchers. These networkingtechnology are not only significant on science and engineering but important on a broad range of applications such as critical infrastructure protection and security, disaster relief operations, biodiversity mapping, medicine and healthcare etc. Wireless Sensor Network applications require Wi...
متن کاملFormal Specification and Verification of a Selective Defense for TDoS Attacks
Telephony Denial of Service (TDoS) attacks target telephony services, such as Voice over IP, not allowing legitimate users to make calls. There are few defenses that attempt to mitigate TDoS attacks, most of them using IP filtering, with limited applicability. In our recent work, we proposed to use selective strategies for mitigating HTTP ApplicationLayer DDoS Attacks demonstrating their effect...
